SONGS for Weebly
***Scroll down for the Long Lost Cassette (1983)***
Friends know that I love music -- and have for most of my life. Since retiring I have had the time to begin writing music again --- something I started back in the late 1970's. There was about a quarter century hiatus, but the luxury of time that retirement affords has allowed me to begin putting some new songs together. I'm learning how to use GarageBand, and the fabulous Apple App "Music Memo" allows me to get some scratch tracks down without much effort.
Back in September, 2015, I told Carol Marie that I was going to try to write "a song a day." Dream big, right? Nonetheless, it looks like I've gotten about 50 compositions written since them and, while I am extremely self-conscious about my singing (it sounds a bit like a frog caught in a running tailpipe), I am going to start posting lyrics with songs recorded on Music Memo. So, here are the first few and I'd love to hear any feedback. Most of these are first takes and you'll even hear me interacting with Haley, our dog. You can, I believe, just hit the "play" button and then scroll down (or up) the page to read the accompanying lyrics. There are 8 songs posted, so just scroll up and down and you can figure it out.
If you have ideas or reactions to any of what's posted here, please let me know! [email protected]
Thanks for listening and I hope it's fun in some way shape or form. I'm planning on posting more (depending on the feedback) in the near future!
Here are some photos from over the years --- from the earliest days on the Dick Contino Accordion to a series of Fender guitars.

Happy Ignorance
There’s so much that I don’t know/in the world of high tech wiz
So many app’s and hashtags/so much Twitter biz
A world that’s surely passed me by/without a nod or blink
To what I might have offered/it really makes you think.
It’s true that there are many things/in cyber I don’t know
It’s true that I can’t tell the diff/from an app to my elbow
And certainly I look around/lost in this new space
But I’m not always sure / that I’m in a bad place
True, I’ve never been to Rome/ and I’ve not been to France,
But maybe, oh, yes, maybe,/ it’s happy ignorance,
With no page on Facebook /and no Twittersphere account
That may lead you to think/ I’m some foolish lout..
While I’m missing out/ on these very new life styles,
I’m thinking that I’m far ahead,/ maybe by some miles.
While your gaze is on that screen,/ lost there in a trance,
I’ll just sit here, very pleased, /in happy ignorance.
And let me tell you here and now, /as I live and breathe,
All that hyper cyber stuff /is not really what I need;
Give me human people, /good old flesh and blood,
then you’ll start to see exactly/ what I really love.
True, I’ve never been to Rome/ and I’ve not been to France,
But maybe,oh, yes, maybe,/ it’s happy ignorance,
With no page on Facebook /and no Twittersphere account
That may lead you to think/ I’m some foolish lout..
While I’m missing out/ on these very new life styles,
I’m thinking that I’m far ahead,/ maybe by some miles.
While your gaze is on that screen,/ lost there in a trance,
I’ll just sit here, very pleased, /in happy ignorance.

Rain in the Forecast
When things are going smoothly/almost every day
Nothing’s going badly/nothing in the way
And then the sky turns gloomy/oh so very fast
And that is when you realize/there’s rain in the forecast
It starts out as a sprinkle/then builds throughout the day
Raindrops falling harder/Sunshine? Not a ray,
You’re drenched before you know it/soaked right to the core
You didn’t hear the forecast/that weatherman’s a bore!
You didn’t hear the forecast/that rain was on the way
You went and made your plans/for a sunny day
Now it’s pouring down/you’re shut in through the night
The rain was in the forecast/but you never think they’re right!
You have to change your plans/create something new,
You’ll have to stay inside/try not feeling blue,
You’ll have to pay attention/when the weather’s on t.v.
And if rain is in the forecast/plan accordingly
You didn’t hear the forecast/that rain was on the way
You went and made your plans/for a sunny day
Now it’s pouring down/you’re shut in through the night
The rain was in the forecast/but you never think they’re right!

Lambs to the Slaughter
Thinking there might be a grand plan/We briskly set out, good will in hand,
Sure that there’d be steep cliffs to scale/but never believing that we could fail.
We thought we were leading/but then saw them bleeding/Where had we made a wrong turn?
All sliced to shreds/did we make these beds?/What was it we failed to learn?
Confirming the fears and inducing our tears/How was it we didn’t know?
Naïve and trusting/ while villains were lusting/to kill our ideals as we slept.
Walked into their trap/Lost, with no map/sneaking behind us they crept.
Unknowing victims/an unholy dictum/ gone in one fatal blow.
Lambs to the slaughter/the world’s out of order
And nobody knows where to go.
Lambs to the slaughter/the young sons and daughters
Innocents, all in a row.
Sifting through rubble/all of that trouble/rolled in like angels of grief.
Some say it’s too late/you’ve sealed your own fate/the writing’s all over the wall.
You hope there’s still time/to undo the crimes/and issue a clarion call.
To marshal the forces/and all the resources/to bring the long needed relief.
Lambs to the slaughter/the world’s out of order
And nobody knows where to go.
Lambs to the slaughter/the young sons and daughters
Innocents, all in a row.

The Social Network(?)
I don’t Tweet or Tumbl/and when I speak I mumble/walking I can stumble . . .
What do you make of that?
No Instragram or Facebook/no username or cool Nook/no Kindle or celeb cook . . .
What do you make of that?
What the heck is CafeMom ?/ And I don’t like Classmates.com/might as well just photo-bomb!
What do you make of that?
Instragram is not for me and SnapChat seems a luxury/ for people using precious time,
please do not start wasting mine!
Google is the way to go and YouTube can sure tell and show/but I really do not want to know,
my life is just fine.
Music comes from Spotify /and I’ll tell you, it’s no lie , /Pandora might just be the place/
when you’re worn out from MySpace.
LinkedIn, Foursquare, and there’s Yelp /I’m sorry I don’t want the help/
WhatsApp, Meetup, Match.com / I’m wishing it would all be gone.
Cyberspace is wonderful in, oh, so many ways/but I am left here all alone,/longing for the days/
When privacy was mine alone and hacking was a cough/
Please do me a favor /take your sites and just fuck off.

My Old Ride
Oil spots on the driveway/the starter moans and groans,
The brakes need extra pumping/and you need to pay that loan,
To some it’s just a junker/but I’ve had it for so long,
Can’t ever really give it up/or sell it for a song.
The shocks are worn & useless/the a/c never works,
Cold throughout the winter/the steering pulls and jerks,
The tires are all balding/the fuses are all blown,
Driving with one headlight/just trying to get home.
My motor’s running down and the gauge, it sits on “E” –
Slowing in the curve of Life, there’s so much left to see,
Like the car, I’m out of gas & coming to a stop,
I’ve spun out in a dead end and someone called the cops!
That’s the way it goes sometimes/when cars have passed their prime,
And that’s the way it goes for us/when we’re out of time,
Just like that old Junker/running on those fumes,
Trying to run one last light/ and humming some old tunes
My motor’s running down and the gauge, it sits on “E” –
Slowing in the curve of Life, there’s so much left to see,
Like the car, I’m out of gas & coming to a stop,
I’ve spun out in a dead end and someone called the cops!

Switchback Roads
Over time we travel far/on highways and back roads,
Sometimes we know where we are/ but other times we don’t….
Getting lost in places /that we’ve never seen before,
Finding our way home again/ reaching that front door.
It used to be we’d use a map/ we got from filling stations,
now it’s just some satellite/ impersonal relations,
No one cleans the windshield or goes to check the oil,
We’re on our own in this vast land/it’s all like foreign soil.
Switchback roads turn you around/from this place to the next
Switchback roads confuse the trip/makes driving one big mess,
Switchback roads can scare you, too/as they ascend the heights,
And Switchback roads can make you scream/ when driving them at night!
Not sure where you going/unclear where you’ve been,
This road looks familiar/are you driving it again?
Just enjoy the scenery/while you’re on the ride,
And hope that old Good Fortune/is in that seat beside.
Switchback roads turn you around/from this place to the next
Switchback roads confuse the trip/makes driving one big mess,
Switchback roads can scare you, too/as they ascend the heights,
And Switchback roads can make you scream/ when driving them at night!

Famous
If I could be famous like Leonard,
I wonder how things would turn out,
Writing about that wire and bird
Would I be rid of all doubt?
If I wrote those poems and real famous songs,
Would I be a happier guy?
If I traveled the world, like I belonged,
Would I reach up and touch the sky?
If I could be cool like Leonard,
sharp suits and neat hats abound,
Would all my clever words ever be heard?
Unlike my now silent sounds.
Hunky dory, there’s no glory
In being an also-ran,
When you count the score, wanting more,
the bleachers are empty of fans.
If I could just think up some lyrics
that make people sit up and say,
“He’s verbally defying physics,
it sounds like a whole new way.”
If I could be famous like Leonard,
talking to music I wrote,
I’d be the next well-known word nerd,
not just some lame footnote.
Hunky dory, there’s no glory
In being an also-ran,
When you count the score, wanting more,
the bleachers are empty of fans.

Odds and Ends
When you were younger and had lots of friends,
You didn’t have time for old odds and ends,
You found out those things changed over time,
Leaving you standing at the scene of the crime.
Odds and ends, odds and ends,
Long ago memories, long lost friends.
Boxes of junk and bags long forgotten,
the back of a fridge where things go rotten,
Things don’t make sense, turn on those lights,
Loud clanging sounds and dark endless nights,
Wandering lost and looking for friends,
You’re just left with nothing but old odds and ends.
You wasted your time on cheap thrills and wine,
Then you walked out there, crossing those lines,
Years have gone by, some wounds never mend,
Like a forgotten closet with old odds and ends.
Down a wrong road, lost in the woods,
Coming and going, nothing is good.
Odds and ends, ends and odds,
Sometimes there’s nothing left in the cards
Things don’t make sense, turn on those lights,
Those loud clanging sounds, dark endless nights,
Wandering lost and looking for friends,
Your just left with nothing but old odds and ends.

***The Lost Tapes***
1983
Okay, so I mentioned that I've been playing and writing music for quite some time, though not steadily. 1983 was the first big outpouring of songs and there is one copy of a cassette recording made at that time. One side of the tape was made in New Haven, CT in the summer of 1983, when I was attending a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminar for Secondary Teachers. Among the great teachers I met there was Kevin Cahill, who possesses a beautiful singing voice. He and I did a number of covers as well as a few original numbers and I'll dig that up and post it here at a later date.
What I'm going to post here, now, is a recording I made in November of 1983 and sent to several members of that Seminar group as a Xmas present. It is nine original songs. Looking back, what I can see is that at age 34 the songs were mostly about love and relationships (not necessarily "happy"). Having traveled another 33 years since then, my songs now are about mortality and dealing with a world that is constantly changing. Such is the process. It's interesting, too, (for me, anyway) to hear the difference in my voice (I'm not sure for better or worse).
At any rate, I am offering this set of nine, with the written lyrics for each song below. The tape plays straight through (you can move the cursor to advance it if you like) so it's 32:29 of music and narration. The lyrics are listed (in order, I believe) after the music posting.
Enjoy and, as always, comments can go to: [email protected]
Thanks.

Circumstance
(11/25/83)
It was such an easy dance , Rhythms of circumstance,
Moved our feet across the floor.
Those graceful steps in time, I thought your heart was mine,
Even as you walked out the door.
II thought you’d see the light (Dm)
I knew you’d feel the night (Bb-C)
the cold December winds of love (Am – E)
But as I stood alone (Am-F-Am) I knew that’s I’d go home,
To echoes of the world we knew.
It scared me to my core, I needed more and more,
your soft voice to to see me through,
IIn the cold grrey rain (Dm)
the depth of mounting pain (Bb-C)
Seeped through my skin and to my soul (Am-E)
I danced alone that night (Am-F-Am), in darkest shadow light,
As tears crept down my cheeks so slow.
You were gone for good, (Am-F-Am) and I knew that I would,
Continue dancing on my own.
I’m caught in that dance (Dm), It’s the circumstance (Bb-C)
Of lives that run along a ledge . . . an edge
It was such an easy dance (Am-f-Am), Rhythms of circumstance,

The Man of Her Dreams (?)
She really thought she had it all,
she never knew that house of cards
could fall.
She really thought she had it made,
She never knew that it could ever fade
away.
It came to her as such a shock,
The key still fit but the lock
had been changed.
She looked around and he was gone,
just a note, a memory of the songs
he wrote.
The empty house, the vacant home;
he wandered off, now she’s left alone
for good?
He had been the Man of her Dreams,
she never knew, the lies and the schemes
he used.
It seems like one thing then it’s not,
you never know quite what you’ve got,
it seems.
The echoes of their time spent here,
The sounds are loud, but the voices
unclear.
He had been, the Man of her Dreams,
she never knew, the lies and the schemes
he used.

One Way Tickets, One Way Rides
She bought a one way ticket to Florida,
she really wasn’t sure if it was far enough
away.
Time and space had all closed in,
Sometimes things ain’t as they seem,
y’know
One way tickets, one way rides,
Dead end roads and alibis,
People laugh and people cray,
It’s all one way tickets and one way rides (y’know)
But times get rough and times they change,
the sun comes out when you think it’ll rain
some days.
Fate can deal us all tough hands,
can often spoil the best laid plans
we have.
We have to try to push ahead,
no matter what’s been done or said

Deaf Man Dancing
(06/27/82 – 9 a.m.)
Like a deaf man dancing (Am), like a blind man in a maze (Em)
Stumbling down alleyways (Dm) I wander, in a daze (F-G-Am)
The mornings come too quickly, the nights don’t go away,
I run from sun to shadow, flee from every day.
It may seem crucial (Dm) but it’s only your life (Am)
It may feel awful (Em) ‘cause it cuts like a knife (F-G-Am)
It’s so sharp, you don’t know it, ‘til the blood oozes out,
It’s painful, but don’t show it, don’t scream or shout.
It’s the torture of not knowing, it’s the sin of ignorance,
It’s the mindless, endless running, into a black abyss.
I know we never wanted, to hurt ourselves this way,
Through the torment and through anguish,
That broken souls must pay.

We Won’t Glow
(a protest song for Three Mile Island)
7/7/82
You know they’re trying to tell me A7-D7
They want me to believe, that if it goes,
if it blows, we won’t glow
Now, you know that I’m no genius, but listen here to me,
I know, that ain’t so, let’s tell’m NO!
‘Cause I don’t want to light up like the Champs Elysee D-E-G-A
or a hot night, downtown on old Broadway D-E-A
And I don’t want to light up everywhere I go D-E-G-A
Tell’m no, no, no, no, We Won’t Glow! D-E-A
Limited, they say, like it’s easy to control,
but we’ve seen these guys at work before …
“Real Careful” is their promise, they support their facts with polls,
Bit I say we should kick’m out the door.
Chorus
They say, “3-Mile Island’s over, we’ve learned from our mistakes,”
Just give us one more chance to show you, please.”
Well, liten to me, brother, ‘cause the choices that you make
Could leave you charred, and cancered, and diseased ….
Chorus

Just Lust
(10/14/82)
upbeat, rapid strumming
It just ain’t enough (A-G) Though it may fill you up (A-G)
You’ll be empty, again, by tomorrow . (C-D-A)
The fires of passion, are always in fashion,
But you’re left cold to beg, and to borrow.
It’s just lust (C-D)
And it don’t mean much (G-A)
It’s gone before (C-D)
The Sun comes up (G-A)
The games that you played, The statements you made,
are meaningless now, in the light . . .
The way that you planned, to make your demands,
Are lost now and far out of sight.
It’s just lust (C-D)
And it don’t mean much (G-A)
It’s gone before (C-D)
The Sun comes up (G-A)
It can twist and turn you, Bend and burn you,
And leave a man so down and out.
It shatters your pride, it attacks from inside,
You whole world is nothing but doubt.
It’s just lust (C-D)
And it don’t mean much (G-A)
It’s gone before (C-D)
The Sun comes up (G-A)

Too Weak to Live
(too scared to die)
05/10/83
Like a bird with a broken wing,
it just can’t fly (C – Am –open)
Watch it struggle, it will never sing,
Just a plaintive cry …
Too weak to live, F-G
Too scared to die C-Am
It wanders alone F-G
And you just want to cry C-Am
Like a ship at sea,
that’s rolled and tossed,
Like you and me,
Knowing all’s been lost,
Chorus
Like an abandoned child
On his own,
Once carefree and wild
Now all alone
Chorus
F-G : How many times . . . How many times and
How long can this go on? (C-Am)

For Love
(05/10/83)
Up tempo – Am – C – D – F
We never stood a chance, not even from the first,
We hoped for the best but expected the worst . . . .and here it is…
Star-crossed and love torn, we tried until we cried,
Windswept and shopworn, A million times I’ve died
For love, for your love, it’s all I had, it’s all I’ve lost
For love, for your love, I must be mad, I know I’m lost
What a fool to think that I could change the tides of time,
With that headlong rush I took, committing Fortune’s crime . . .
Chorus
She never really knew that love could tear your heart this way,
She’d always heard it said sung and said, that you pay and pay and pay …
Chorus

Love Gone Wrong
(08/09/82)
You became a liar (Am-G)
A victim of desire (Am-G)
Made it so easy to cheat (F-G)
Caught up in passion’s heat (G-Am)
It made you double deal,
for moments you could steal,
Hidden glances, stolen chances,
Running, doing killing dances …..
Love gone wrong (Am-G) can’t be played out in a song (F-G)
Love gone by, too soon to cry, too late to try ….
Was it ever worth the rish,
And did it have to top the list,
of things you thought, you had to try,
those things that make you die?
The chances that you’d take,
The stories that you’d fake,
Just to steal an afternoon,
And then it’s gone so soon…
Love gone wrong (Am-G) can’t be played out in a song (F-G)
Love gone by, too soon to cry, too late to try ….
Repeat verse one and chorus
